Essentials!

There have been a lot of conversations lately about essentials. Before COVID-19, the word essential was probably used without much thought.  This has recently changed. During the ongoing health crisis, it has become one of the most frequently used words. It’s referenced in daily news conferences, state and local government briefings, corporate meetings and within our homes.

Businesses, professionals and community activities have been categorized by the term. All this talk about essentials has caused me to pause and reflect on a deeper level.

Lexico.com defines essentials as absolutely necessary, extremely important or crucial. Our behavior has been dictated by the necessity of social activity. As such, this expression is used to evaluate travel, work schedules, extra-curricular activities and health risks. Will this impact the way we live and use our time going forward? I hope so.

The mandated time of quarantine has allowed many to enjoy life at a slower pace, to re-establish relationships, begin exercise routines and discover new talents. Priorities have shifted and we’ve been reminded of the simple pleasures in life. Who would have thought a successful trip to the grocery store for toilet paper, alcohol and sanitizing products would bring such joy 😀.

There are opportunities for positive changes as the “new normal” is defined. Albert Einstein once said, In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity. As restrictions are lifted and cities reopen, may we reflect upon lessons learned during this period and become stronger as a result.

As I close this post, I would like to express heartfelt thanks to healthcare providers, caregivers, hospital staff, pharmacists, first responders, military personnel, grocery store chains, big-box stores, restaurants, manufacturers and anyone else serving on the front line. Your efforts are sincerely appreciated and essential during this critical time. We are grateful for your sacrificial service and will remember you in our prayers.

With gratitude,
